Reducing Costs

Energy is costly. In power generation or energy-intensive industrial activities, the cost of importing energy is a significant proportion of the total overhead of operation. Energy is typically imported to a site in the form of coal, gas or electricity. Enerji's heat-to-electricity conversion technology can reduce fuel use or grid-source electricity consumption, saving considerably on operating costs.

Scenario 1

A power generation facility imports gas and burns it to produce electricity. Heat from the combustion of fuel is vented to the atmosphere as exhaust. Enerji can capture, concentrate and convert this exhaust heat into electricity. The additional electricity reduces the load on the primary power generation facility, reducing gas consumption and gas costs. On-site emissions are also reduced.

Scenario 2

A smelting process uses electrical arcs to create zones of very high importance. The arcs are produced from high-voltage equipment connected to the electricity grid. High temperature fume gas from the smelting process is filtered and vents to the atmosphere. Enerji can capture the heat in the fume gas and convert it to electricity. Additional electricity is fed back into the arc furnaces, reducing consumption from the grid.

Scenario 3

An industrial site uses steam for chemical processing, produced in a boiler fuelled by coal. The site also uses electricity extensively to power pumps, lighting, conveyors and other equipment, sourced from the grid. Once the steam has passed through the process it is vented into the atmosphere, still containing significant amounts of energy. Enerji can capture the heat in this 'low grade' steam and convert it to electricity. Electricity is fed back into the site's distribution network, reducing the amount of power drawn form the grid. Additionally, Enerji's heat exchange equipment is used to pre-heat water entering the boiler, reducing the consumption of coal required to bring the steam to the correct temperature. On-site emissions are also reduced.

Sites like the ones in these three scenarios pay a high cost for fuel over very long periods. In most instances, fuel or power prices are regularly re-negotiated with suppliers. Given fuel costs are such a large contributor to total operating costs, these negotiations represent a high operational risk.

Enerji's heat-to-electricity conversion equipment can significantly reduce these operating costs, thereby helping to reduce a project's risk over its life-cycle.

Eliminating Capital Risk

Just like with other renewable technologies, the costs of waste heat recovery is focused on initial capital expenditure. Even when cost savings in the medium and long term are obvious, gaining approval for capital expenditure can be challenging. That's why Enerji offers a range of contractual options that provide an immediate benefit to the customer and make it easy to gain approval for new, energy-saving equipment. Enerji funds the installation of its heat-to-power systems, so there is no capital commitment required from its customers.

Once Enerji has analysed a customer's site, developed the most efficient heat-to-electricity solutions and installed the equipment, it then offers a range of flexible options:

Scenerio 1: electricity sale

Enerji signs a medium-term contract to supply electricity at a lower price, with the option to extend.

Scenario 2: shared services

Enerji compares the level of fuel consumption with that prior to installation (using historical metering information) and shares the cost savings with its customers.

Scenario 3: build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT)

Enerji operates the equipment on its customer's behalf for a fixed contract period, earning a fixed monthly fee. Enerji also trains its employees in the care and maintenance of the equipment. At the end of the contract period, the customer takes ownership of the equipment.

Scenario 4: equipment sale

Enerji trains a customer's employees in the care and maintenance of the equipment. Enerji's development costs are paid up front.
